How it works

How to VLOOKUP two files

  1. Add the main file

This is the list you want to add information to, like orders.

  2. Add the lookup table

The file that holds the extra details, like customers with names and emails.

  3. Pick the matching columns

Choose the shared column in each file. Customer ID in orders, Customer ID in customers. They are guessed for you when the names match.

  4. Download

Untick any columns you don't need and save as CSV or Excel.

Why this converter

Everything VLOOKUP does, minus the pain

No formulas

No ranges, no column index numbers, no locking cells with $.

Several columns at once

Bring 1 or 20 columns across in one go. VLOOKUP needs a formula per column.

Tolerant matching

Trailing spaces and different capitals still match, the top cause of #N/A in Excel.

Every join type

Keep all rows, only matches, or everything from both files.

Find what's missing

Add a "Match found" column to filter the rows with no match.

FAQ

Questions

How do I do a VLOOKUP between two files?

Add your main file and the lookup file, pick the column they share in each, and tick the columns to bring across. The result appears instantly and you can download it as Excel or CSV.

Why does my VLOOKUP return #N/A?

Usually the values don't match exactly: an extra space, numbers stored as text in one file, or different capitals. This tool ignores spaces and case, so those rows still match.

What is the VLOOKUP formula in Excel?

=VLOOKUP(A2, Customers!A:D, 3, FALSE) finds A2 in the first column of the range and returns the 3rd column. FALSE means exact match. Newer Excel has XLOOKUP, which is simpler.

Can I merge two spreadsheets by a common column?

Yes, that is exactly what this does. Choose "All rows from both files" for a full merge that also keeps rows found only in the second file.

What if the lookup table has duplicates?

By default the first match is used, like VLOOKUP. Choose "Repeat the row for every match" to get one row per match.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your data never leaves your computer. It works offline once the page has loaded.
